From Karelia to the Skolt Sámi Lands is a journey into our cultural heritage and roots. The project, which started in 2020, investigates the common heritage and unique characteristics of the Skolt Sámi and Karelian people. The project culminates in an album and record release tour combining new and traditional Karelian and Skolt Sámi folk music.

The concert features lullabies, leu'dds, dance songs, laments, poetry and old beliefs in musical form, performed in Finnish, Skolt Sámi and Karelian. While the focus is on vocal traditions, the concert also features accordion, ukulele, thumb pianos, percussion and harmonium. The performers are Anna Lumikivi, Erkki Lumisalmi, Amanda Kauranne and Emmi Kuittinen.

The project has been supported by the Kone Foundation, the Lapland Fund of the Finnish Cultural Fund, the Arts Promotion Centre Finland/Lapland Regional Fund and the Karelia Cultural Society.

Along with the concert, the From Karelia to the Skolt Sámi Lands project hosts song workshops in Helsinki on 1 November (3pm-5pm) at the Vuotalo and in Tampere on 3 November (10 am-1 pm) at the Uulu Music School.

The workshops are open to everyone and free of charge, but advance registration is required. We commit to safer space principles at these events.
