Carpathian Flutes

Marian Friedl, born in the Czech Republic in 1979, studied the double bass at the Jaroslav Jezek Conservatory in Prague with famous Czech player and composer Jaromir Honzak, and ethnomusicology at Charles University in Prague with renowned composer, researcher, and shakuhachi player Vlastislav Matousek.

Currently, he is a freelance musician and a teacher at the Department of Musicology at Palackeho University in Olomouc (Czechia) and elsewhere. He also acts as an independent researcher, publicist, composer, and arranger. He is dedicated to reviving the playing of forgotten instruments in the Western Carpathians, music production, music creation, popularisation of folk music and improvisation. Marian Friedl performs concerts on double bass, clarinet, folk flutes, bagpipes, kobza, small dulcimer and other instruments in genres ranging from classical music to folklore, world music and jazz.

His multifaceted musical abilities are captured on more than thirty CDs. He has collaborated with a number of renowned performers of the world music scene such as Petra Nachtmanova (A), Mehdi Aminian (IRN), Jan Rokyta (CZ), Jitka Šuranská (CZ), Casey Driessen (USA), Stano Palúch (SK), Yasukazu Kanó (JAP). He has performed in most European countries as well as in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

In the "MMK-GMC Sessions: Musical Lecture" series presented by the Global Music Centre and Itäkeskus Library, Marian Friedl introduces Carpathian flutes and their associated traditions.
