Introduction
Kalabaliikki is an ethno-fusion band that plays fictional, retro-futuristic world music that combines features from lesser-known corners of the world with modern technology. Kalabaliikki is the soundtrack of a lost world, music that seeks to awaken a sense of nostalgia in the listener for things that never existed. The band's most well-known musical roots lie in Cretan music, Greek rebetiko and Anatolian music. Underneath the exotic riffs and melodies played by Cretan laouto and Turkish baglama, a futuristic synabasso rumbles, and seductive grooves are provided by a drum kit and percussion. The band's musicians have long been influential in the Finnish ethno-music scene and have played in, among others, the legendary Maria Gasolina band, Stadin Juhlaorkester and Hypnomen.
